About Us

Our Home is Your Home

The New Victorian Mansion Bed & Breakfast, located at 325 Dayton Avenue in St. Paul’s historic Cathedral Hill district, is a distinguished and lovingly restored example of Queen Anne Victorian architecture. Built in 1894 for Frank P. and Anna Shepard, the mansion blends Renaissance and Gothic design elements, showcasing intricately carved woodwork, grand fireplaces, and spacious guest areas that evoke the elegance of a bygone era.

The Shepard family played a foundational role in shaping Cathedral Hill. As prominent figures in St. Paul’s early society, they commissioned several stately mansions within a few blocks of one another, establishing the neighborhood as one of the city's most architecturally refined and prestigious areas. Their lasting influence is felt throughout the district, and the mansion at 325 Dayton stands as a remarkable testament to their vision. Architectural highlights include a round turret, ornate roofline trim, multiple balconies and porches, and shingled gable ends, all signature features of the Queen Anne style. A Modernist front addition, constructed in the mid-20th century, housed a Montessori school for several years and now a daycare, a continuation of the property’s long legacy of community use.  The home is a contributing structure within the Historic Hill District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Throughout its vibrant history, the mansion has been a private residence, a boarding house for an international school, and a residence divided into apartments. In 2013, it was transformed into the American Society of Interior Designers Showcase Home, where many of the Twin Cities' most talented designers collaborated to restore its historic charm while weaving in modern comforts. Today, it operates as a luxurious bed and breakfast and an elegant venue for weddings, retreats, and special occasions, offering guests a rare opportunity to experience timeless grandeur with contemporary hospitality.

Guests staying in the mansion are welcomed by the stately columns of the wrap-around front porch, overlooking Boyd Park and the surrounding Cathedral Hill neighborhood. The lush courtyard in the back offers a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city—perfect for morning coffee, reading, or simply soaking in the serenity.

Inside, the home’s Victorian-era foyer sets the tone with damask walls, intricate floor tiles, soaring ceilings, and a dramatic wooden staircase. Rich hardwood floors lead you through a space filled with character, warmth, and thoughtful details.

The mansion is also home to a third-floor penthouse, available as an extended-stay rental. This unique space features five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a chef’s kitchen, and a primary suite with a Carrara marble bathroom, making it ideal for longer visits or creative retreats.

For culinary professionals and event hosts, the mansion offers a fully equipped commercial kitchen, available to rent for private events, chef residencies, or catering needs—an ideal environment for creating unforgettable meals in a historic setting.

While every detail of the home celebrates the richness of its past, modern amenities are seamlessly integrated throughout, ensuring every guest experiences comfort without compromise. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway, a romantic celebration, or simply to be immersed in the magic of old-world elegance, The New Victorian Mansion welcomes you home.
